Matti Palmu

I am a carpenter, a third generation artisan, born into a family of central Finnish Copper smiths.

I have found my love towards creation from the surrounding forests. Here grows the raw, unique and extrodinary material I turn into art, products and interiors though carpentry.

The apprentice and education from artisan grand masters Kari Virtanen, Rudi Merz and Peter Schmidt at the village of Fiskars have shaped this path towards the finesse of carpentry as a passin and profession.

I am inspired by the rugged and ascetic nature of the Finnish archipelago. The arched and twisted pines native to the islands really feed his imagination, and my most productive design work is often conceived after surrounded by the sea and actual source of the raw material.

“Wood is such a beautiful material and a natural resource that grows without the need of humans meddling. It is also the corner stone of Finnish design and its natural beauty fascinates me. The details of my work are created by nature itself, the knots and curves of the raw planks find their way into the finished pieces. For me nature is the most accomplished designer.”

The materials I use come from Finnish forests are hand picked plank by plank. Careful selection of materials also help in minimising waste. My products are hand crafted in my Helsinki based workshop. Hand made items created to a specific need guarantee that the quality is always impeccable and will last for generations.

The products respect the natural world they came from and are a sustainable choice for you and your family to enjoy for a long time.
